May. 7th, 2008 12:37 pmWhoopi can sing, what do you know? (she was singing with The View guest Steve Winwood). I have a hard time getting myself to watch tv sometimes, I don't know why since it's right there and fun. Then I see the snow in the screen--old analog tv, receives only the major free networks--and I have to balance on one foot and touch the bunny ears just right, and the animated tweed look isn't quite as bad. Well, it was a freebie and the best I could afford. About 10-15 years ago I bought a brand new one for 4-5 hundred bucks, thought it was good but it happened to have one of those built in accidental flaws, same for each tv in that series. I couldn't afford to pay to have it fixed, so it's just been sitting there for years. Now I'd not only have to get it fixed but buy the darned box for it so it'll be ready for the new HDTV whatever...bitch bitch bitch.
Ugh, Iost weight and gained some of it back, but that could have been worse. I am still determined to get down about another 50 pounds--I think. I really think I kind of look not there when I'm thin, so maybe I just have to concentrate on having a personality and wearing some color--what else do you do? I wish I'd had this determination when I was younger, and really known about the power of positive thinking. Well what else is new.
The weather is top dog, 60s-70s, and the lilacs are in bloom--it's May. Beautiful May. George Clooney's birthday today I think. GC is a local boy who made good, you know him of course. But I remember his dad Nick's talk show being on after school every day, and then he became a really good local news anchor for a long time. And he was and is SO cute. The photos of George and him at the same age are insane or scary or something, it's like there is no difference between the two. They're transgenerational identical twins. Wow.
I saw a week or so ago, someone making a list of their 101 favorite positive words. I wish I could be that positive and make a list. I had started one of 10 back in January, but let it go. Then I saw this thing. Ten is just not that ambitious I guess.
There was a program on PBS called Secrets of the Sistine Chapel, about Michaelangelo and his painting of the Sistine Ceiling, his relationship with Pope Julius. Pope J was the reigning pontiff during Martin Luther's visit to Rome, the one that made him decide that the church of Rome was full of crap. Julius had at least one mistress, by which he had at least one child, and he made war on fellow Christians over mere political crap, no good reason. The whole atmosphere in Rome and the Catholic Church had become decadent, the priesthood was often a joke, just way to get power and play politics. The authors of a recent book were saying there are clues in the ceiling painting that indicate Michaelangelo thought the Pope was a jerk, but he just couldn't come out and say it. There are some characters in the ceiling who are usually thought to represent Pope Julius, because you couldn't commission art and not have yourself in it being honored somehow, heck he paid for it (with church money). But there are little cherubs and putti in the background giving him the Italian version of The Finger. Well heck, probably so. I think Michaelangelo really wanted to achieve something great, but he couldn't do it all by himself, or it would be better with Pope J's support. It was pretty much inevitable.
I think Michaelangelo was honest, so there is no way he would have fallen for all the fake politics in Rome. He really did seem to have a genuine and very diligent love for God, and he stuck with it. I love the painting of Christ behind the altar best, the circle of the saved souls (which include all sorts of people who the RC chuch persecuted, such as Jews). There were some souls in the process of being saved, but they were struggling to climb up to him, some in the process of falling to hell, but they were people in despair who had just given up and would not struggle. This guy was just amazing. I love the things he says about himself in his letters and writings.
Well, guess I'd better get out and enjoy the sunshine. Hope you're all well and good. I haven't even checked out anyone's stuff since last week. Oh god please let me get internet at home.
