Moldova Shenanigans
Apr. 11th, 2008 01:53 pmI just did a Google image search, and clicked on a link, but for some reason the window locked up. Then I happened to see the link had the word Muldovia or Moldova or whatever, and I quickly tried to shut down the computer. It was quite a struggle, and I finally had to use control/alt/delete as the startup menu wasn't working, shut down the power. I hope that did the trick.
I'd heard of a virus scam like that a few years ago, where you'd click on a pic passed in an email, then it would activate a program that supposedly originated in MULDAVIA, but was actually a place based in Canada. You were none the wiser, but your computer would now connect with that link, and your credit card would be charged for the hours you spent online at that site, even though the hours you spent online were ones you didn't even know about. Er, I'm finding it hard to explain well. But you probably know what I mean.
So I hope to God I haven't activated anything that's going to come back and haunt Patty. The computer seems to be okay after shutting off the power as soon as possible, hopefully interrupting the process in the middle of it.

I wonder if there is a way to check. I might go to computerhelp after a while to see if there is a way to check before Patty comes back. Not that there is a problem telling her, lol, she knows I'm a screwup. That's partly why she's a friend, I can be myself around her.
She gave me $30 bucks for the weekend, for the dog and housesitting, and as far as I know that's fair and generous. I really needed at least a few bucks, and will be able to do some things I would be able to, such as eat. I get free internet without having to feel embarrassed about stealing time from little kids at the library, etc. Darn the dialup and very old programs, there's just a lot I can't do. But even for that, it's a good thing. Plus I feel helpful, which sometimes is a tough feeling to come by.
